of which Kazim Ali says:

Speaking of being captivated, when I was in Cleveland’s most exciting new independent bookstore, Guide to Kulchur, I picked up on a whim a few small volumes that appeared to have been published by the author using Lulu. I was so entranced by the seemingly simple but endlessly complex, prickly lyrics that I wrote to the author, Barton Smock, through his blog, kingsoftrain.wordpress.com. He’s been sending me books now and then and his latest, Eating the Animal Back to Life, is just knocking me out. These poems are desperate, tender, wry, alarmed, god-obsessed, and musically driven. Smock is not published by others, he does it all himself and so the only place you can get his books is here. All the advanced degrees and publishing credentials in the world can’t get you the unspeakable duende that Smock somehow taps into, poem after poem.

…The result of this type of work is that a poem might seem fractured, when it is not. Smock works with both image and symbol in order to create poems that are iconoclastic, alpha and omega…

poems, from and missing:

[untitled]

I am waiting to have the one dream
belongs
to my ghost

in heaven
the story
of my emptiness
has only
a middle

what I teach my dying son
is be good
to god
now

here are a few words
on context
and here
its haunted
postage

the past
is lonely
if someone
arrives

between birth and death

the gospel
of aftertaste

grief

something smaller
than my brother
has been killed

~

[empty imagery]

Adam had no memory of his first wife. as created, he would look at Eve all day and feel nothing.

the vacation house was found to be owned by another family. in it, my mother resisted arrest.

my father was born with six fingers on his right hand and seven on his left. he was not fond of either hand until later in life when the
grandchildren asked him at different times during their visits if he had been tortured.

God created the world because he couldn’t do it on his own. ah, note to self, fuck off. person is place. I might’ve killed a man had I not been poking holes in a poem by Barton Smock.

my brother says it’s part of his condition that he can only explain himself from the waist down. he says he feels horrible in the back of his head and wants me to take a look. he says I don’t know what darkness is. before I can play doctor he remembers he has a story he wants me to write. the outline of the story is off site. in the opening scene brother recalls that a young man is blowing dust from a human skull made of plastic because it’s all the narrator can afford.

the head itself was an afterthought. had god not allowed the soul to come up for air, beauty would have been spared our invention.

a single mother is a twofold mirage. please argue above her quietly. her legs collapse. her child comes first.

your sister is the only person I’ve recorded to have been born without a gift. I was told this in confidence by an angel masquerading as a small animal the size of which escapes me.

I am aware a sparrow exists. not in a spiritual vacuum. people are another hell.

excuse my friend his earlier joy in saying who do I have to fuck to get fucked around here. at age 19 a man exploded beside my friend and my friend went quiet. to his grave thinking his own bomb malfunctioned.

autism, intellectual disability – please share, act, and/or witness

please take a moment with this post from my sister-in-law, Amy Smock:
Imagine a muggy, 90-degree day. With the heat index it actually feels like 95-degrees. Now imagine being on a bus. On a bus that is sitting dormant; no air conditioning blowing through the vents and no breeze flowing through cracked windows. Now imagine being on said bus from 9:00am until 2:00pm. 5 hours. Now imagine you cannot speak, you cannot communicate your needs. There is no one around you to go to. All you know is that 5 days a week, for the past 7 years, you have been getting on this bus at your home and traveling 2.4 miles where a staff member from the adult workshop you attend comes to get you. Now imagine no one comes to get you. Inside, you know this not right. This is not the routine. But you can’t say a word. You can’t tell the bus driver to stop. Wait. This isn’t the routine. Instead, you’re taken on another trip. A trip you’ve never been on before. Except when you get there, the staff member isn’t there either. And the bus driver gets off the bus. And again you think, this isn’t right. Stop. Wait. This isn’t the routine. But you can’t say a word. So instead you wait. You wait because someone must be coming to get you. Because, for the past 7 years, 5 days a week, that has been the routine. So you wait. For 5 hours. On a locked bus. On a 95-degree, Summer day. For 5 hours. This is exactly what my sister, Alisha, went through on Thursday, September 8, 2016 in Lancaster, Ohio. My sister, Alisha, a 29-year-old woman who has Autism and an Intellectual Disability. A woman who can’t, and never has been able to, communicate her needs to those around her. A woman who, for the past 29 years, has relied on loving, caring, supportive people to be advocates for her. But on Thursday, that was also taken away from her as she was left on a city operated bus, for 5 hours. My family and I need your support. We are determined to provide Alisha with some form, any form, of Justice. As of today, with an ongoing investigation, these are the facts we have and it is Alisha’s Word against the bus driver’s. A Word she does not possess. So we are asking you, from the bottom of our hearts, to do any of the following: 1. Share this post. 2. Visit http://www.disabilityrightsohio.org/… submit an intake form describing the mistreatment. 3. Send any names of agencies you think may be able to help bring justice to this situation. I want to thank you on behalf of Alisha, and our entire family, for taking the time to read this. We cannot, and will not, allow this to be swept under the rug. #JusticeForLittyLou

[unlikeness]

not much happened. after I was born, father stood outside of a church and watched mother go in. before I was born, they had eleven cigarettes between them and smoked maybe nine.

not much happened. my brothers joined me on a bike ride. we made visors of our hands and squinted into the sun. we looked for a hill. we stopped to watch a boy being pulled into a house by a spotted arm.

the loneliest thing I’ve done is buy a hammer.

[his fastball]

he wants to know what he collects. he prays. he is blindfolded by the parent he rarely sees. he is taken on foot to an empty showroom only he can imagine. he is hugged. not asked, he goes into detail about his outfit. parent flips through a notebook. parent leaves to find a pencil. outside in a miniature snowstorm another parent throws an egg through the tail end of melancholy.

~

[the stripper]

beauty is the beginning of beauty. a man and a woman wait together for a stripper. you know the man like an intimate thought. like a toddler covered head-to-toe in blue body paint stepping in front of a blue door. the woman is an unfinished stranger whose son comes home to be with war and whose husband rests until laziness subsides. the man is aware he’s the devil and this makes him god. the woman is unaware she’s the devil and this makes it easy. the stripper is watching a horror film and it makes her want to have a child. she decorates her home then tries to remember moving a muscle. the blood you don’t see is fake.

[his impressions of the experiment]

my closest frat brother looks at the toad and says frog motherfucker. tackles me. fact: there is a certain kind of toad that by staying still can kill a drug dog. in this country, a man can sell doves from the back of a white van. a man can run out of doves. my ghost is obsessed with caterpillars. it doesn’t matter what you say. they found that woman.
