~bookmark (for children, for self)

what a strange bet. strange risk. paying a higher insurance premium has never made me feel unsafe. not being able to get a job has never made me feel unsafe. are there things I need to work on…yeah. I’ve never acted as if my body was done with me. but, this pretending you’ve been programmed to forget yourself as the inventor…just, no. if the darkest does not come to pass, no one gets to say I told you so. possibility, once born, is forever.

[snakeskin]

by the time god gives you a daughter
he’s already met
the one person
in the crowd
he can make
disappear.

older now, sadder

I admire
love.

[waters]

we wrestle sometimes in the junkyard over who gets to guard the lullaby machine. we share an image of our father making a throwing motion while above a necksick dog. of our mother dropkicking a pumpkin to egg on the nothing y’all can come and get. we aren’t close but chew together loudly and lip-synch the hymns we know. spiders forget the sea.

~

[ladders]

we’re not allowed to be in the house past a certain time. we read in tongues from the book of that’s how babies disappear. we hide the insomniac’s handsoap. our fathers do impressions. our mothers the bulk of the digging. we waste little. blood, paint. from our dream supply.

~to my kids

I’m sorry you had to see that.  your college.  your healthcare.  your body and your spirit.  but, I am not sorry you were here to see it.  not sorry you’ll remain.  we’ve always gone without.  now, we share that without with absence.  be kind, but keep count.  this is not the fault of one.

some poems from the collection are below:

[madrigal]

we know he’s sick. ya body, ya body.

an angel of nonsense, this dying…

god’s
inability
to memorize…

/ I will say to the maker of doors

your mother
gave birth
standing up

~

[laconicism]

sex, make your face.

my father returned a clock
hair
fell from
a birthmark…

deaf as a housefire
my brother was raped
in two
tents, he pulled our mom

from a clown car
a tornado
died
in hell

~

[rune]

I burn
sticks
for dreaming
dogs

/ forgiveness

you empty
crow

~

[circa (ix)]

at a therapy session
for those
unable
to dream
I am handcuffed
to my mother
whose imaginary
lover
has lice

a baby born with a wig
rattles on
about sleep

death’s eyepatch

~

[circa (xxiii)]

hunger is a clock devoured by worship

the rabbit hole
burdens
abyss

~

day more

first fog
and the speechless
are giving
birth

longing is a stickman’s tail

a boy I know
checks
for his nose

whose father hits a deer

whose mother won’t mention
the puppet’s
bra

untitled

I tell it what I tell my stomach. if I die, you die. but there are limits to what the past can do. I had a kid once. insects were invisible. my mom was a face turning two from god. never worm do I know where to start. nightfall, and the number of hands I’ve collected hasn’t changed. brother still kicks himself for the nine months he couldn’t film. the best thing he wrote down had in it a father, who’d never seen a wheelchair, setting a trap for a wheelchair. it is like me to wait.
